Jessica Meger is an intern in Vinland’s residential chemical health program. She is currently earning a bachelor’s degree in alcohol and drug counseling from Metropolitan State University.
How did you become interested in substance abuse counseling?
Past personal and family experiences.
Why were you interested in an internship at Vinland?
I was really interested in the TBI component of Vinland’s program. Some of my family members have had strokes and heart attacks that resulted in brain injuries, so I’m interested in working with people with TBIs. I also really liked the atmosphere at Vinland – the staff is very friendly and welcoming!
What are your goals after graduation?
I plan to get my LADC (alcohol and drug counselor) license and work for a few years. Then I will go back to school for either family marriage therapy or to become an addictions doctor.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Watching and playing sports. I really like soccer, volleyball, and baseball. I’m a big Twins and Wild fan.
Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?
I want to backpack around South America. I speak fluent Spanish, and I’m learning Portuguese.
If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?
I would deal with the adventurous side of me and do everything I’m scared of doing! I would go skydiving and bungee jumping, and I would drive as fast as I could on the autobahn in Germany.
