  • Of the approximately 1.4 million Americans who seek medical treatment for traumatic brain injuries each year, 50,000 die and more than 80,000 have long-lasting symptoms that affect their daily lives.

  • Approximately 3.17 million people need help with everyday living due to traumatic brain injuies.

  • Direct medical costs and indirect costs such as lost productivity of TBI totaled an estimated $60 billion in the United States in 2000.

What You Can Do

Spread the word about brain injury. The Brain Injury Association of America has wonderful fact sheets about sports concussions that you can print and share.

Learn more about brain injury. The Mayo Clinic and Brainline.org have great online resources to learn more about brain injury.

Talk about prevention. Reduce the risk of brain injury by following these tips: always wear the appropriate helmet recommended for a sport or activity, do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, remove obstacles near stairways (loose carpet, shoes, toys, etc.), and keep firearms stored in a locked cabinet.
